Buy Vacation Home Rather Than Rent

When it comes to making the decision to buy a vacation home there are a few things to consider. How much will you use it? Is it near where you live? Are you buying it for an investment?

The answers to these questions will guide you in your purchase decision. If it's near where you live, it's likely that you may use it most every weekend. Many people in my area have cottages on the lake or trailers and they go every weekend. Some people move there for the whole summer.

If you are a snowbird and only use your Florida condo or home in winter, it may make sense to list it with a management company so you can rent it out during summer months. You can often make enough to pay for taxes and upkeep this way.

People who are very busy often find that a time share is practical. A large group of people share the costs and each have assigned periods to use the property. One of my brothers has a time share and he said his family enjoys going to the same place for a few weeks each year.

My other brother is thinking long term. He bought a lake property a few years ago and plans to live there full time when he retires. Many people who buy Florida homes when they are young eventually retire there when the winters become too much for them.

I have quite a few friends who have bought a vacation home and ended up living there full time. Other people buy a vacation home, use it for a while, and sell it for a nice profit. There always seems to be a market for a home in a resort area.
