Mountain Vacation Homes For The Privacy We All Crave

I'm not exactly Heidi, although I did love the book, but I think renting a mountain vacation home sounds like a fine idea. You know healthy mountain air, goats' milk, one with nature and all that.

Seriously for the person who loves to hike in summer and ski or snowshoe in winter, a mountain vacation home rental makes a lot of sense. Of course you can rent one anywhere they have mountains. The Poconos, Adirondacks, Great Smokies in the East all have a lot to offer.

If you want to head to the West, the Rockies are there for your enjoyment. Washington and Oregon have mountains, lakes and beaches. My family went to rent a cabin in north Georgia one November. We thought we'd do a little fishing in the mountain lake and hike around a bit. The first night it turned unseasonably cold and we had no heat except for a fireplace. Thank God for my Daddy, who knew how to build a fire. Had it been left to me they would have found our cold stiff corpses.

It was nice the next day and we fished and caught some trout, which the lodge kindly prepared for us. Despite the unexpected cold, it really was lot of fun and not too expensive. There were some interesting little shops nearby and a flea market. I know that's the case with most any mountain vacation. For the outdoor lovers, there's the outdoors, and for the rest of us, shopping.

I now live near the Adirondacks now and on the weekends there is a steady line of traffic from the cities to the mountains. The rental cabins and condos are booked a year or more in advance. Lake George and Lake Placid offer fun winter and summer. From tiny cabins to huge chalets, there is something for every taste and budget.

I still would kind of like to check out the Alps and channel my inner Heidi, minus the goat's milk. It's not as tasty as the book made it sound. If you can afford Europe or Aspen, go for it, but there are some great mountain vacation homes close to home.
